12th Station - Love Dies
Scene: Top of Calvary hill, three crosses stand together.
Jesus hangs limp on the cross. Body sags down between two arms, one slightly elongated; knees are buckled.
Mary, crowned with ten stars, sits on the rock seat, looking at her Son. John kneels beside her, with his head in her lap, also looking up at the Christ. John has one hand wrapped around Mother's knee, the other under his own head. Mary has one hand on John's forward shoulder and the other is caressing his hair.
It is accomplished. The ultimate sacrifice. Life given by God, freely and willingly offered back for the sake of your fellow men - and accepted by the Father.
Yet all your friends had left was an empty shell, a twisted body deserted by the eternal life which was committed by You back to the Father. They could not understand that even in dying You had plans to care for them and to feed them with your own body.
Thank You, Lord, for our Mother. Even whilst she looks upon the horror that we have inflicted upon You, the destruction that we wreak, she still comforts and mothers us.
If only we had her strength and her love, how beautiful the world could become.
But instead we are weak and at times of greatest tribulation how often do we find that we have turned away from You and sought consolation elsewhere.
