A Dog's Life

It's a dog's life being a slave
from my birth to my grave;
but I shall not complain
for slaves some fortunes gain ~
I get my food and that is free
tho' I can't say the same for me.
Because my lord's welfare's my end
he dares to call me his best friend...
whereas sometimes I feel
I'd love to bite his heel,
thereby causing him to trip
and do a stylish double-flip.

Anniversary

Birthday today?
What shall I say?
Perhaps I may
simply pray:
"Happy Day!"

By the way
have no fear...
though I'm here
(not so near)
you're still dear

so have cheer
and sink a beer!

A verse that's new
says "Don't feel blue."
These words for you
felt through and through
are really true...

"Good luck to you!"

Did You Ever

Have you ever ridden moonbeams?
It is easier than it seems;
coasting round on flota-cars
playing dodgems with the stars.

Have you ever caught a bee-thief
hiding pollen 'neath an oak leaf?
keeping honey from the hive
to sweeten up his own dive...

Did you ever want to play
in great Nature's carefree way?

Have you ever felt as merry,
floating down on a ripe berry,
as a drunken Spanish grape
sneaking off in big black cape?

Have you ever felt as crazy
as a chainless summer daisy,
on the rampage round the lawn,
pushing grass aside with scorn?

Did you ever want to play
in great Nature's carefree way?

Happeee

Toes
Big toes
Your big toes
Nuzzle up to me
and seem to be
happeee.
Know
my nose
My nose knows
when it goes
to nuzzle thee
it sure will be
happeee.
Your toes and my nose
your nose and my toes
all go to show
they know you and me
know we will be
happeee.

I Will Return

Once again I'm all alone
since the day we split;
music seems to have no tone,
all the crosswords do not fit.

Though you are not far away
each night I lie awake
looking forward to that day
when our friendship we'll remake.

For a while we were conjoined,
bound with love's fair strands;
now away from you I've found
how I long to hold your hands.

While my labours keep me here
in this distant land
you know I will hold you dear
by the ring that's on your hand.

I wonder why you think of me
as I think of you;
and I wonder could it be
that this magic's really true?

And when I return to you
for eternal time
just to prove that it is true
I will make you truly mine.

Love Is Strange

"What's to do?
Why are you so blue?"
"It's coz it's true
that I do so love you
but they can't see
what's with you and me."
"What's in it for them?
Might there somewhere be a gem
to see and admire?
Or maybe something higher,
like a pile of money...???"
"We're odd!2 "But they're funny,
honey!”

Love Of Love

Love of my life I live for your love
and when I gaze on the stars up above
I think of you all alone and I pray
that you'll be safe to the end of the day.

Sometimes of somedays I go into church
just to make sure I'm not left in the lurch;
for if it's true then when I meet “Mein Gott"
I'll feel a fool if I've said that He’s not.

Further to which it would seem that it's true
He's helping me to show my love for you.

No More War

There is a war in Viet Nam
that is the Devil's last grand slam.
He dreads the truth and hates the dove
but we fear losing sight of love.

Doesn't he know we've had enough
and now the time to call his bluff
is drawing oh so very near?
That's why the world is full of fear.

He tried again in Northern Ireland
brandishing an evil Red Hand;
they wanted to rule by gun...
now they can see what they've done.

Brought themselves the hangman's noose -
they've let an ugly monster loose
which murders kids by their front door
coz we won't give it bloody war.

They told us that it couldn't happen
and even tried to put a cap on
a pressure point that had to give.
We have to love if we would live!

They say that wars will never end...
must think that we're round the bend!
We know the other side won't fight
for they also have seen the light.

Don't you know that troop reductions
have become of our deductions?
Money saved for arming me
is better suited buying tea,

turning bayonets into ploughs,
growing food for hungry cows
to make milk and meat for thee.
A different world it's going to be

when people arm themselves with flowers;
their money doing good like ours
now we've found that just to love
produces truth and frees the dove.

And so, by finding love of life,
no fear of death by gun (or knife)
can swerve us off the path so true;
open-handed, we love you.

November Afternoon

Good day to you, my good old man
I wonder if I can
just talk to you here for a while
I'd like to sit and see you smile
for as you're sitting calmly there
it seems to me there're none who care,

Please excuse me my lamé suit
and finger-rings of jute;
I'm just an ordinary man
one who with his wages can
wear good clothes and look so bright
and never e'er feel cold at night.

Yet despite all my frills and flares
I also feel that no-one cares
for tho' I may be warm at night
I too have my private plight...
my love is lost and I'm alone
my heart is made of rolling stone.

Perhaps if I could listen to you
and hear your tale of valours true
then maybe I could share
the glory you must have felt there
and learn how to
give myself too.

Overcome With Joy
(for Vee)

Isn't it a smashing day?
Oh, I feel so bright and gay
instead of in those bad old dumps
like all those camels and their humps.

Always I would feel so blue
even when I was with you;
that was 'cause I used to find
a problem ever on my mind.

I never knew just how to set
about finding what I must get
to overcome that obstacle
which was for me a manacle.

Then one day I sat and thinked
and thinked. .. then suddenly, I blinked!
Why was it not before so clear
this answer that's so very near?

Having tried the answer out
there is in my mind little doubt...
Since I walked, around the wall
there is no obstacle at all!

The Absent-Minded Forty-five Degree Ice-Cream Man 1971

I know an Irish Eyetie
who is a rather odd guy.
He lost his stiletto knife
but loves his novel life,
living in a dream
of Guinness and Ice-cream.

Where, oh where's his stiletto knife?

In times of often imminent strife
he very often wonders
why it is he blunders,
fumbles shaky-handed
and oh so absent-minded.

We know his approach, it easily shows
and not by his phony Roman nose
but coming round the door
first look at the floor!

His feet, then his knees,
are first that one sees.
His body next
and then his neck's
topped by the head
which his feet have led.

We think he's really the bee's knees
standing at forty-five degrees;
bending over backwards he
seems happy helping you and me.

The Human Race

"See them race!"
From inside my face
I watch the human chase
and feel pain.

I often wonder
if the distant thunder
will rent the sky asunder
and bring rain.

Perhaps it may
or p'raps today
will be bright and gay
with sunshine.

Whatever the sky
may pour on my
body still I
will feel fine.

The Loser

In my cell reading a book
thinking about when my luck
ran out;
when that gallant cop was shot
I just stood and wondered: What
about
his family? Wife? Perhaps a kid!!
I stood wondering while they did
SHOUT
at me to run and hide
while they did hastily ride
out

with our LIVES.

Togetherness

Here you are, my dearest heart!
Of all the girls I've known
something made you stand apart -
and seeds of love were sown.

Gazing into your blue eyes
I could read your soul
telling me I would be wise
if I gave my whole.

I used to dream when all alone
of what I'd be with you.
Now you're mine our love has grown
and all those dreams come true.

Since I'm yours and you are mine
at last I dare believe
that ev'rything will turn out fine
...what wonders I perceive!!

As much as then when we were two
I love you now we're one,
and my angel, I'll love you
'till all the stars have gone.

Weather Or Not

Hello, hey, hey - look bright and gay
today is such a lovely day.
Never mind the rain pouring down...
you don't have to wear that frown;
although the sky is overcast
this lousy weather cannot last.
So never mind your soaking feet
look forward to tomorrow's treat,
because the sun will shine again
and make up for this saddening rain;
and even if it doesn't shine
the day will still be bright and fine
because the gloominess, you'll find,
is purely what is in your mind.

Who Is Right?

The recluse sits and invokes God
that the world will change its ways
while a more emotional man
falls down on his knees and prays.

Buddhist says to modern man
"You must escape from this shroud,"
but he's never heard today,
maybe his voice isn't loud.

While the Moslems wail in prayer
that Mohammed split the moon
we all stand around in doubt.
Can it mean the end is soon?

Though the Christians pray in church
that we all might love and care:
outside they will torture us
if our skins aren't coloured fair.

Old men wonder why the young
want to change the style of life,
yet they cannot seem to see
their ways always led to strife.
